Nurses: Leading Change, Advancing Health

In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Initiative on the Future of Nursing released the report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. This groundbreaking report was based upon four key messages that will set nursing on a path to transform the health care workforce.

  • Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.
  • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.
  • Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States.
  • Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure.

As part of this nationwide campaign, the Georgia Nurses Association (GNA) has joined forces with over 400 nursing leaders to implement the recommendations of the Future of Nursing report in Georgia. In 2012, GNA/GNF played a vital role in the initiative by leading fundraising efforts and helping to finalize Georgia’s RWJF state implementation grant. The effort resulted in Georgia becoming one of the first states to be an Action Coalition. Georgia’s Action Coalition is broadly represented by nurses across our state, and GNA/GNF currently serves as one of the co-leads of the initiative.

Work to implement the recommendations of the Future of Nursing (FON) report is ongoing at the state-level across the U.S.

Support Georgia’s work to implement IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations

Georgia has been named an "Action Coalition” by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, which is coordinated through the RWJF Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA). GNA/GNF and other external nursing organizations form the core of the Georgia Action Coalition, which broadly represents nurses across our state.
